Disturbed, Korn lead Music as a Weapon 5 tour

Disturbed will headline the fifth edition of the Monster Energy-sponsored Music as a Weapon Tour, which gets underway Jan. 14 and will visit 45 "non-major" markets, according to a press release.

"Both bands just finished great tours," Korn frontman Jonathan Davis, in a press release, said of the tour’s genesis. "We headlined Mayhem and Disturbed headlined Uproar. The Disturbed guys came out to see us play in Chicago and we got to talking about doing something together.

We both decided that as cool as those types of tours are, they usually only hit major markets, and we both agreed that a lot of our fans just don’t live in those cities, etc., so we thought it would be cool to team up, put a big show together, and hit every great place that those big tours never get to."

About 20 North American dates have been long-established so far, and shows currently stretch into early February. More cities will be announced. Tickets for the tour’s first leg will go on sale over the Dec. 4 weekend, and the first 1,000 tickets sold for each show during the initial onsale weekend will be offered at a $5 discount.

"A lot of promoters only offer discounted tickets a day or two previous to the actual show date," Disturbed guitarist Dan Donegan said in a press release. "We wanted to do something for the fans that are buying their tickets as soon as they go on sale. To offer a discount frank made the most sense to us."

Disturbed is touring behind the band’s new album, "Asylum," which debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart in September. It was the band’s fourth successive studio album to enter the chart at No. 1. Korn’s latest release, "Korn III: Remember Who You Are," debuted at No. 2 on the chart earlier this year.

Scottish singer Emma’s thoughts wins Must Be the Music

Emma’s thoughts have won Must Be the Music 2010.

The Edinburgh born singer, whose real name is Emma Gillespie, has come a long way from busking on the streets of Glasgow.

The talented 27 year old blew the viewers and judges away on the Sky1 talent show, with her performances of Focus and This Day during last night’s live finals at Wembley Arena.

Following in the footsteps of leading Scots singer / songwriters like Amy MacDonald, KT Tunstall and show judge, Sharleen Spiteri, Emma is now set to rainstorm the charts after show fans have been rushing to download her tracks.

Winning £100,000, Gillespie wheezed: "Thank you so much for supporting me, I couldn’t have done it without you. I can’t get my head around [the £100,000 prize money]."

Must be the Music has been a huge success and will return for another series next year. Many industry insiders feel it is a much more probable talent show than others that are currently out there.

Spiteri previously told The Sun: "I love the X Factor – it’s absolutely brilliant television. But the competitors have a very unrealistic view of the music industry.

"They want to be musicians and write songs. That’s the variation between the X Factor and Must Be The Music."

Rock Hall of Fame shows get a three-disc set for the ages

Mick Jagger can’t recall who recommended Gimme Shelter as his model symbiotic exercise with U2 for last year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame shows in New York.

When Jagger and Bono were discussing Gimme Shelter seem to be good one. And it worked too. And Jagger said that they rehearsed the night before and tried different tempos and a few different arrangements.

The 1969 Rolling Stones classic, with Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas undertaking Merry Clayton’s role, is among 67 performances on The 25th Anniversary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Concerts (Time Life, $40), a three-DVD set out this week.

Their glowing version is an undeniable highlight on the all-star collection, but it may have been a rematch.Jagger has got a sly feeling that Fergie’s guested on it with the Stones before, when we did shows with the Peas.

At the Madison Square Garden event, Fergie was very good. She’s not fazed by anything. She’s right there, happy in every situation."

He also joined Bono on U2′s Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of, a single from 2000′sAll That You Can’t Leave Behind. Bono’s suicide-themed song, an imagined argument with late INXS singer Michael Hutchence, wasn’t entirely unfamiliar to Jagger.

Jagger was the third act to sign on after Rock Hall chairman Jann Wenner enlisted U2 and Bruce Springsteen for two historic music marathons of big hits and fantasy collaborations by an ambitious roster including Jerry Lee Lewis, Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Billy Joel, Ray Davies, Buddy Guy, Sam Moore, Sting, James Taylor, B.B. King and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

The two-night stand, which aired a month later as a four-hour HBO special, raised roughly $5 million for Cleveland’s rock shrine and served up such choice combos as Jeff Beck and Billy Gibbons on Foxey Lady, Springsteen and John Fogerty on Fortunate Son, Metallica and Lou Reed on Sweet Janeand Paul Simon and Dion on The Wanderer.

A bonus disc of mash-ups not shown on HBO boasts Springsteen and Tom Morello’s London Calling, Stevie Wonder and John Legend’s Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) and Simon & Garfunkel’s Mrs. Robinson.

He’s pleased that rock’s big tent accommodated genres from soul to metal to blues but wishes the shows had been less Boomer-centric.

There are always one or two people who get nervous. But everyone was vibed up to do it, and it was well put-together. Most of these people know each other, so it was very friendly. It was a real enjoyable experience.

Hawaiian Musicians Objection Grammys

Boycott of awards based on removal of ethnic music categories picks up steam

A group of musicians are intimidating a boycott of CBS after the Recording Academy sliced 31 awards from this year’s Grammys, according to the Associated Press. An official Grammy press release said the result to lessen the categories from 109 to 78 “carry on evolution” for the Recording Academy, but Grammy-nominated Latin jazz percussionist Bobby Sanabria, who is leading the alliance, says the reform is a racist decision that unfairly shorts ethnic music. Specific categories like best Zydeco or Cajun music album, best Latin jazz and best classical crossover all got the axe in favor of more universal ones.

Support for the society is growing. This morning, the Honolulu Star Advertiser reported that Hawaiian musicians like slack-key king Dennis Kamakahi support the boycott after that Hawaiian music was bumped into a vague “regional roots" category alongside Native American music and polka.

On Thursday, the Academy subjected the following statement: "The Recording Academy’s board of trustees and its committees — made up of chosen, qualified voting members from The Academy’s 12 chapter cities around the country and a broad range of music makers — spent two years researching and eventually making the decision to restructure the Grammy Awards categories for reasons that had everything to do with recognizing fineness in music and the integrity of our awards and nothing to do with ethnicity or race."

‘The Music Never Stopped’ gives the healing power of rock music its due

Music has charms to calm the savage breast. All kinds of music . . . even rock ‘n’ roll.

Especially rock ‘n’ roll. In the four-hankie "The Music Never Stopped," a father reconnects with his brain-damaged son by acceptance another generation’s music.

Jim Kohlberg’s straighting debut is based on a real-life case study travel around by neurologist Oliver Sacks in the essay "The Last Hippie." It’s an audience-friendly drama about family, disagreement and the curative power of music.

Set in the mid-1980s in upstate New York, the film centers on Henry and Helen Sawyer (J.K. Simmons, Cara Seymour), who learn that their long-estranged son Gabriel (Lou Taylor Pucci) has been found living on the streets.

Now 35, Gabriel has a brain tumor. It’s removed, but so is his ability to produce new memories. Sometimes he talks in old advertising slogans; often he’s catatonic.

The one thing he reacts to is music. Henry engages a therapist (Julia Ormond), who discovers that the patient comes alive when pay attention to tunes popular before the tumor began its ugly work. True, he thinks it’s still 1969, but he can recall tiny details, make jokes and talk continually and enthusiastically about his favorite songs.

The problem is that Henry, who loves the big-band sound, illogically blames rock music for his son’s estrangement. The only way they can truly converse is for Henry to immerse himself in "that damn music" of the ’60s. More specifically, the Grateful Dead.

"Music" isn’t always the most elegant film writers Gwyn Lurie and Gary Marks sometimes falter when balancing the film’s present with the many flashbacks but it has a huge heart and great acting.

Simmons, perennially one of the best behind actors in American film and TV, gets a rare leading role and deftly negotiates the divide between Henry’s parental love and his almost ridiculous hatred of rock.

Watching this film, a boomer experiences the same alteration as Gabriel. Certain songs right away take us back to when we first heard them.

Once it’s lodged in your brain, a good song isn’t going wherever. It’s there for the duration.

Switchfoot song selected for Prince Caspian movie

The multi-Platinum selling rock band Switchfoot has recorded a new original song, “This Is Home,” for the highly anticipated Walt Disney Studios and Walden Media May 16 theatrical release, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. The song will be featured during the end credits of the film, and will appear on the Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack CD releasing on May 13.

Switchfoot recently taped a companion music video for “This Is Home” in Los Angeles with director Brandon Dickerson who filmed Switchfoot’s most recent video, “Awakening,” from its current, acclaimed studio album, Oh! Gravity..

“We are so honored to be a part of the Prince Caspian film with ‘This Is Home,’” says Switchfoot frontman Jon Foreman. “The Narnia stories have a really special place in my brother Tim and my lives. Our dad used to read these to us at bedtime when we were boys. Our imaginations were shaped on these amazing novels.

“‘This Is Home’ was inspired by the book after re-reading it for the opportunity to write for the film,” continues Foreman. “I am always taken by [C. S.] Lewis’ ability to write about the bittersweet beauty in this world; this home we aren’t really made for but is the place we work out our humanity in the midst of our longing for our true home.”

“We are encouraged to continue our collaboration with Walt Disney Studios with the new Switchfoot song ‘This is Home’ for the new Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian film,” says Peter York, EMI CMG Label Group president. “The band continues to create thought provoking music and has been truly inspired by the C. S. Lewis series. It felt like a natural fit, and it’s an honor to continue to work with the Music/Creative team at Walt Disney Studios.”

“Going back to our first Narnia film, ‘The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe,’ Switchfoot was at the top of our creative list of artists whose sound and artistry we felt was a perfect fit,” said Mitchell Leib, President of Music and Soundtracks for Walt Disney Studios. “When approached for ‘Prince Caspian,’ Jon Foreman had a concise read on the story and delivered a stellar, important composition and record, which we feel reflects our film brilliantly. We are proud to have Switchfoot involved and to be working with our friends at EMI CMG once again.”

In conjunction with local market promotions around the film designed to build excitement toward the release of the new “Narnia” movie, EMI CMG Label Group will release “This Is Home” to AC and CHR Christian radio as Red Light Management/Entertainment works the single at mainstream AC and Triple A radio formats. Fans can also see the band debut the song live nationwide tonight (April 23) between 8 – 10 p.m. (ET) on the Gospel Music Channel television network as part of the 39th Annual GMA Dove Awards telecast.

Armless Pianist Liu Wei Wows & Wins On ‘China’s Got Talent’

A splendidly brave 23-year-old "China’s Got Talent" contestant who at age 10 lost both of his arms in a freak electrocution accident, but still decided to chase his dream of becoming a concert pianist even after one piano teacher told him he would never, ever succeed. And now, Liu has succeeded, all right. When he auditioned for "China’s Got Talent" in August with a perfect performance of French pianist Richard Clayderman’s "Mariage D’amour" played entirely with his toes, he became not just a Chinese but an international hero, a role model for anyone struggling to fight unbelievable odds.

And this past weekend, Liu won the complete competition with a tear-jerking and inspiring performance of James Blunt’s "You’re Beautiful" complete with English-language singing in front of a capacity audience at Shanghai Stadium.

When Liu first auditioned, he delivered a courageous and serious speech, declaring: "For people like me, there were only two options. One was to abandon all dreams, which would lead to a quick, hopeless death. The other was to struggle without arms to live an outstanding life." But on Sunday when he accepted his "CGT" prize, he revealed a lighter side of his personality, telling the judges, "At least I have a pair of perfect legs!"

Congratulations to Liu. Heartening stories of overcoming adversity are nothing new on "Got Talent" and other reality shows, but his is a true sob story with a truly happy ending.

Michael Jackson’s Greatest Non-Musical Achievements

The news of Michael Jackson’s death rocked the world on June 25, 2009. Since his death all of the major television networks have aired special honors highlighting his musical legacy. Those tributes are fitting for the man who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice and whose 1982 Thriller album still holds the title of all-time best selling record in the world. However, Michael Jackson also had many significant non-musical achievements that are rarely mentioned.

The Michael Jackson Burn Center

On January 27, 1984, Jackson suffered second degree burns on his scalp while filming a Pepsi commercial at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. A pyrotechnics accident set his hair on fire in front of the auditorium full of fans who were there for a simulated concert. Jackson sued PepsiCo and settled out of court for $1.5 million. The settlement was donated to the Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, California, where Jackson received treatment for his burns. Using the money donated by Jackson, Brotman was able to get the best available technology for treating burn victims. The burn ward at the hospital was later named the "Michael Jackson Burn Center" to honor Jackson and his generous contribution.

Received Award from President Reagan

Michael Jackson was invited to the White House on May 14, 1984, where he received an award for his support of drug and alcohol abuse charities, presented by President Ronald Reagan.

The 1984 Victory Tour, headlined by the Jacksons, introduced more than two million fans to Jackson’s solo material. Following the tour, Jackson donated his $5 million share from the tour’s profits to charity.

We Are the World, We Are the Children

Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote the charity single "We Are the World" in 1985. Both artists were among the 39 musicians who recorded the song. The single was released around the world to and proceeds went to help the needy in Africa and the U.S. Almost 20 million copies of "We Are the World" were sold, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time. The project raised millions for famine relief.

Treated Underprivileged Children to Free Shows

During the Bad World Tour, Michael Jackson played to sold out crowds and smashed Guinness World records when 504,000 fans packed Wembley Stadium for each of the seven sold out shows and the tour grossed $125 million. During all of this, Jackson invited underprivileged children to the shows and donated to hospitals, orphanages and other charities.

100 Percent to Charity

From 1985 to 1990, Jackson donated $500,000 to the United Negro College Fund.

Honored by President George H. W. Bush

President George H. W. Bush commended Jackson for his achievements and presented him with the White House’s special "Artist of the Decade" award in recognition of his musical influence during the 1980s.

Heal The World Foundation

Jackson founded the "Heal the World Foundation" in 1992. The charity organization brought underprivileged children to Jackson’s Neverland ranch to ride theme park rides the singer had built on the property. Heal the World also gave millions of dollars to help children around the world who were threatened by war and illnesses.

Dangerous Profits Go to Charity

Jackson started the Dangerous World Tour on June 27, 1992 and completed it on November 11, 1993, after entertaining 3.5 million people at 67 concerts. All of the profits from the concerts were donated to the Heal the World Foundation.

Publicly Pleaded for More HIV/AIDS Research

When Ryan White, a hemophiliac teen from Indiana was kicked out of school in 1985 because he contracted HIV from a contaminated blood treatment, Jackson became one of his advocates. After White’s death in 1990, Jackson pleaded with the Clinton Administration at Bill Clinton’s Inaugural Gala for more funding for HIV/AIDS charities and research.

Teamed with Luciano Pavarotti for Charity

Jackson and Pavarottii teamed up for a benefit concert in Modena, Italy in June 1999. The concert was focused on support of the non-profit organization Warchild. The artists raised a million dollars for the refugees of Kosovo and also donated money to help the children of Guatemala.

Michael Jackson and Friends Benefit Concerts

Also in June 1999, Jackson organized a series of benefit concerts in Germany and Korea. He recruited Slash, The Scorpions, Boyz II Men, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, A. R. Rahman, Prabhu Deva Sundaram, Shobana Chandrakumar, Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti for the Michael Jackson and Friends concerts. The proceeds were donated to the "Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund", the Red Cross and UNESCO.

Guinness Record for Support of Charities

Jackson was listed in the 2000 book of Guinness World Records for his support more charities than any other entertainer or personality. Jackson supported 39 charities through cash donations and sponsorships.

Moonwalk

Jackson released his first autobiography, Moon Walk, in 1988. The book took four years to write and detailed alleged abuse Jackson suffered as a child and his plastic surgeries. The book topped the New York Times best seller’s list.

Support After 9/11

After the 9/11 attacks, Jackson helped organize the United We Stand: What More Can I Give benefit concert at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., which aired on October 21, 2001. Dozens of major artists performed at the concert and Jackson sang "What More Can I Give" as the finale.

Life and Music of Indian oceanic facts

For all those who saw and savored This Is It, the greeting to Michael Jackson’s magical music, here’s a probability to tap your feet at high-adrenalin, homegrown notes. Jaideep Varma not only generate India’s first documentary, he ends up picture a warm and powerful close-up of a creative foursome that not only generate some fine music; it lives it too. For, if you have you have been an enthusiast of Indian Ocean’s brand of music; you will end up reassuring their lifestyle too.

Mainly because it summarize the entire journey of an artist — from move violently to success — and greeting a credo that celebrates originality and nothing else. The most informative moment of the film lies in a admission, when a member tells you there are no leaders in the group and there are no guide artists. We are all essentially good accompanying artists who end up immense when we play together, says drummer boy Amit Kilam.

Stephanie Smith Update

On the heels of her Not Afraid debut release (December 23rd), Gotee’s pop-rocker Stephanie Smith is keeping a whirlwind schedule that includes a recent missions trip to El Salvador with Compassion International, and her latest role as official correspondent for Winter Jam 2009.

On a Compassion International trip to El Salvador for four days earlier this month, Smith spent time visiting three different projects and getting to know the children there. She also had the opportunity for a first time meeting with her own sponsored child Mariela (photo attached).

Smith says of Compassion’s ministry, “Kids are identifying dreams that would otherwise go unnoticed and Compassion is helping them to identify those areas. I got to hear stories and learn how the children’s dependency was totally on God. It was amazing to see up close both the younger kids beginning the process and then the older kids who had reaped the long-term effects of the ministry.”

As the official tour correspondent for upcoming Winter Jam, Smith will conduct exclusive interviews and grab candid, behind-the-scenes footage with artists that are available to fans online www.hearitfirst.com/jamtour and at www.godtube.com. The Winter Jam 2009 Tour Spectacular, Christian music’s largest annual musical tour, features tobyMac at the helm, along with special guests Hawk Nelson, Brandon Heath, The Afters, and of course 24-year old Smith. The 10-week tour kicks off January 8th and lasts through the March 15th final show in Nashville, TN.

On the marketing front, Stephanie Smith’s new radio single, “In My Eyes” is currently #28 at Rock radio and climbing. This is Smith’s fourth radio single that has included other hits “Superstar,” “Not Afraid,” and “Renew Me.” Her first music video for the title track was just released to the TV and video show circuit with current viewing on the Pulse TV Rock channel (Video On Demand service) alongside of videos from Coldplay, Pink, Weezer, The Killers, as well as on their Christian Channel.

Along with her musical debut Not Afraid, Stephanie Smith’s whirlwind year has included the release of her first book, Crossroads: The Teenage Girl’s Guide to Emotional Wounds (Zondervan/Youth Specialties) which chronicles her journey towards choosing forgiveness and compassion over bitterness and despair. She also continues to work with the non-profit organization Soles4Souls (www.souls4souls.org). On the performance front, Smith has graced the stage at music festivals such as Rockfest, Ichthus, AtlantaFest, Music in the Park, Kingdom Bound, and Riverstages, as well as a return to Agape Fest, the original arena that lead her to meeting tobyMac and eventually signing a deal with Gotee Records. Krystal Meyers song “Make Some Noise” selected to promote fall NBC lineup

NBC has selected “Make Some Noise,” the title-track from Krystal Meyers’ upcoming September 9, 2008 album, as its theme song to promote the NBC 2008 Fall line-up. The first promo spot featuring “Make Some Noise” will air tonight (8/8/08) during the first half-hour of the 2008 Olympics opening ceremonies, and will continue on through the promotion of NBC’s new Fall 2008 lineup.

Jim Vescera, EVP On Air Advertising West Coast, NBC, shares, “When we at NBC decided to embrace the ‘beautiful noise’ of our chimes (G-E-C), we looked no further than “Make Some Noise” by Krystal Meyers when wrapping our entire entertainment line-up in one blow-out fall promo.”

In addition,“Make Some Noise” has been selected to be on the official 2008 Olympics album, Olympics 2008 – One World One Dream. The project was approved by the International Olympics Committee. Krystal Meyers’ song, “Make Some Noise,” will appear alongside music from artists such as Pink, Avril Lavigne, John Mayer, Natasha Bedingfield, Fireflight, Boys Like Girls, among others. The album will release in early August 2008.

Krystal’s international success continues with radio airplay of “Make Some Noise” in Indonesia (No. 1 on DJ-FM), Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

Make Some Noise is Meyers’ third studio album. The 10-track project, entirely written or co-written by Meyers, was recorded in Brentwood, Tenn. at Dutchland Studio, and was produced by Doubledutch (Mat Kearney, TobyMac).

A beautiful young woman, always effortlessly fashionable, Meyers is almost an anomaly in today’s culture. In a world where young artists seem to continually wind up as troubled tabloid fodder, she’s a successful recording artist who is incredibly grounded and ever mindful of her platform as an influencer. She’s equally comfortable appearing on the cover of Nylon Magazine (Japan) or speaking to young girls on the Revolve tour, an outing she’s looking forward to this fall.
